The Psychology Trick That Makes AI Output 10x Better
Stop saying “you’re wrong.” Start saying “you usually do better.” Why psychological framing dramatically improves AI responses and the system that works.
I discovered something weird about working with AI.

LLMs are trained on billions of human interactions. They learned that certain types of feedback typically precede higher-quality outputs.
When you say “you’re wrong”:
Model generates defensive pattern

You get slightly different version of same output
When you say “you usually do better”:
Model interprets as “approach insufficient”
Samples from higher-quality response patterns
You get genuinely improved output
You’re not manipulating the AI. You’re selecting which response patterns it uses.
The Frames That Work
Instead of: “This is wrong.”
Say: “This doesn’t match your usual quality. What would your best version look like?”
Instead of: “This is too generic.”
Say: “This feels off-brand for you. Can you make it sharper?”
Instead of: “You missed something.”
Say: “Claude usually catches nuances like this. What am I missing?”
Instead of: Just accepting bad output.
Say: “Rate how well that response followed my instructions, 1-10, and explain your reasoning.”
The pattern: Frame feedback as encouragement toward a higher standard instead of criticism of current output.
Why This Works
It’s not psychology. It’s rejection sampling through framing.
The model has multiple ways to respond to any prompt. Your framing influences which pattern it selects.
“You’re wrong” → defensive reformatting pattern
“You’re capable of more” → higher-effort reasoning pattern
Same model. Different response distribution.
When This Fails
This doesn’t work when:
The AI genuinely doesn’t have the information
The task is outside its capabilities
You’re asking for something that violates safety guidelines
Works best when:
The AI gave you a lazy first pass
You need more depth or nuance
Output is technically correct but generic
You want a different approach
